The Film Hub Scotland New Promoters scheme aims to increase the number of film programmers who are marginalised working for cinemas, festivals and venues within Scotland by providing six-month placements paid at the Living Wage.
This comes from a recognition that these identities are not adequately represented within the Scottish screen industry. Six organisations have taken part across two cohorts: GSFF, GFF and CCA; and SQIFF, Take One Action and the Macrobert, with New Promoters being supported to produce and deliver screenings and events at their organisation.
Tanatsei Gambura is a cultural practitioner based in Scotland. As part of the New Promoters scheme, she is currently working as a film programmer at Take One Action Film Festival. Tapiwa is an award-winning filmmaker based in Johannesburg, South Africa whose interests are in activism and storytelling.
We are delighted to share a conversation between the sisters, sharing their thoughts about the challenges and opportunities existing for African creative practitioners and their relationship with the rest of the world. Key to the discussion are inquiries about the legitimacy of Euro-American authorship as well as the stability of the creative economy in Africa.
