Film Hub South East

The Film Hub South East (FHSE) region covers Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Norfolk, Oxfordshire, Suffolk, Surrey and Sussex. The region does not include London, which has its own Hub, Film Hub London, managed by Film London.

The Independent Cinema Office manages Film Hub South East for the BFI Film Audience Network in the South East.

Thanks to National Lottery funding, it works with film exhibitors of all types across the region to build new audiences for independent and British films, supporting them with funding opportunities as well as training, programming support and networking opportunities. They also make more of a strategic intervention in particular regions in the South East that currently have little cultural cinema infrastructure through the Spotlight programme.

Support

Project support is available to members through the Film Exhibition Fund, which opens for submissions every spring for activity taking place from April to the following March. Unlike many other Hubs, there is no fixed deadline for applications to this fund, but it is usually oversubscribed, so it’s important to approach the Hub about planned projects and make your submission as early as possible to stand the best chance of successfully being granted funding. Members can also apply for training and professional development bursaries throughout the year.

Training

Film Hub South East organises an annual series of online and in-person training sessions covering a range of topics requested by members. Members are also invited to an annual one-day Film Hub South East Members Forum that brings members together to network, reflect on case studies of successful projects from the region and learn about developments in best practices in the sector.

Programming Group

The Programming Group is a network of cinemas from the South East who meet regularly to share their knowledge and learning on programming specialised film titles and to get up-to-date industry intelligence on key forthcoming film titles, access to preview screenings and guest speakers, and marketing assets from FHSE.

Talent Development

The BFI NETWORK South East team nurtures the professional development of the extraordinary filmmaking talent in the region, builds a confident, diverse, creative community of directors, writers and producers and allocates National Lottery funding to film productions.

Young People

Film Hub South East manages BFI Film Academy Plus in the South East, delivering activity to build and sustain young people’s passion for screen culture. As well as broadening routes for young people to express themselves through filmmaking and develop careers in the sector.

UK-wide BFI FAN Role

On behalf of the wider BFI Film Audience Network, Film Hub South East manages Member Support activities, including BFI FAN CON and national training opportunities, including REACH: Strategic Audience Development and Revisiting Your Cinema Business Model. It also manages the national BFI FAN communications (like this website!).
