Film Hub NI is based at Queen’s Film Theatre in Belfast and thanks to National Lottery funding, it works with film exhibitors of all types across the region to build new audiences for independent and British and Irish films, supporting them with funding investment as well as training, programming support and networking opportunities. FHNI are working intensively in the Newry and Mourne area which has limited cultural cinema infrastructure, through the Spotlight programme.
Support
Support for screening activity is provided through the Film Exhibition Fund, which opens twice a year (April and September), and which offers support for new projects and audience development initiatives for organisations of all sizes. The fund is usually oversubscribed so it is worth contacting us well in advance to discuss your proposals. Members can also apply for bursaries to attend training, screening days, festivals and more.
Training & Events
FHNI organises various events over the year – from business development to social media training, these are offered online or in-person. During the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, FHNI produced a series of podcasts focussing on supporting members while cinemas were unavailable, with advice and support on marketing, evaluation and how online work could support real life screenings. These are still available on the FHNI website. Members are also encouraged to attend/participate in national BFI FAN training where possible.
Networking
One of the key strengths of FHNI’s success to date is the development of a strong network of committed and passionate exhibitors. FHNI bring organisations together for networking events throughout the year, which offers an opportunity for peer support, shared learning and programming ideas.
Audience Development Initiatives
Through the COLLECTIVE touring scheme, FHNI programme and manage tours of independent film from across the island of Ireland (with a focus on NI) which call at various venues across the region. These events are developed in tandem with distributors and talent from each production, and often feature the opportunity to host a Q&A at each venue.
FHNI supports member screenings and events through their active social channels and NOW SHOWING guide on the website – the only source of independent film screening listings in Northern Ireland. FHNI also produces a semi-regular podcast which features interviews with members, partner organisations or guests talking about wider film industry issues and how they relate to exhibition.
UK-wide BFI FAN Role
On behalf of BFI FAN, FHNI has a lead role in the development of exhibition of screen heritage. Working with a range of exhibitors, film archives and partner organisations, we conduct research into trends and challenges in connecting audiences to the rich and varied world of film archive and cinema history.
